As part of a renewed effort to rid the Lagos metropolis of filth, as well as improve the environment, the Lagos State government is set to clear 21 illegal dumpsites across the state. This was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Environment, Muiz Banire during a scheduled monitoring of the state environment where he explained that the administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola "is poised to restore the aesthetic value of the state through the implementation of sustainable environmental development programme towards attaining a cleaner environment in the state."
The commissioner hinted that the 21 illegal dumpsites had been mapped out for clearance during the dry season while the Ministry of Environment will intensify effort to beautify more loops, medians and highways across the state.
According to the information officer of the ministry, Adesoye Oyelami, Banire listed some of the communities to benefit from the clearance of illegal dumpsites to include: Makoko, Iwaya, Badiya, Opebi link Road, Odo Iya Alaro, Agege, Mushin, Alimosho among others.
The commissioner equally assured that three additional modern landfill sites just awarded to contractors would be provided by the state before the expiration of Governor Fashola's administration, and on completion, would be located at Mowe, Ikorodu and Badagry, saying, "the rapid urban transformation has forced the existing dumpsites at Olushosun, Igando and Abule Egba to be at centre of the city, but the new landfill sites would help to prevent possible outbreak of diseases."
He further informed that the state government would use part of the grant it secured from the World Bank to prosecute the job, while horticultural firms are already employed to green and beautify loops across the state.
While charging members of the public to support government's crusade against environmental degradation, Dr. Banire warned youths against using sanitation hours to play football, advising parents to call their wards to order as government would not condone any form of attitude capable of undermining the current beautification project embarked upon by the state government.
In a related development, the commissioner appealed to all residents, property owners, landlords and corporate organizations along highways, airports and presidential routes to commence the painting of their building properties in order to improve the aesthetics of the state, urging residents to join hands in the on-going state wide beatification and greening programme of the state government by ensuring that they rid their frontages of any environmental nuisances.
