The relationship between Spain and the United States will be more "intense" with the arrival of Barack Obama to the White House, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said Wednesday."The agenda will be much more fluid, much more intense," he told parliament after holding talks with key members of the US president-elect's transition team in Washington last week.Moratinos said he met former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Obama's choice for commerce secretary, during his visit to the United States."They all expressed to me a clear desire to recover and boost ties with our country," he said. They also said that if there was a European country that the United States had to improve its relationship with it was Spain, he added.Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero angered outgoing US President George W. Bush by withdrawing Spanish troops from Iraq immediately after being elected for his first term in March 2004.Ties between Spain and the United States were further strained by Madrid's policy of holding political dialogue with Cuba, which Washington wants to isolate.Zapatero told a news conference on November 5, one day after Obama was elected, that he was "completely convinced" that relations between Spain and the United States would now improve."Obama will have in Spain and its government a faithful friend and ally," he said.In an opinion article published on Sunday, The Washington Post said Obama and Zapatero had a number of similarities -- they share same birthday, are both basketball fans and came to power after years of conservative rule. But the newspaper said "some aspects of personality, and of national interests, might constrain the restoration of Spanish-American relations that both leaders favor."It said Zapatero can be "brash and provocative" with his bold social reforms such as the introduction of gay marriage and quick divorces, while Obama "works at being cautious and reassuring."vg-ds/
