Dutch electronics giant Philips said Tuesday it had finalised the sale of 200 million shares in Hong Kong-based flat screen producer TPV Technology for a net 95 million euros (130 million dollars). Philips said it sold the shares to Chinese household appliance maker CEIEC. "As a result of this transaction, which is in line with Philips’ communicated strategy to dispose of its remaining non-core shareholdings, Philips now holds 63 million shares in TPV, which represents a stake in the company of just below three percent," it said.

IBM researchers on Tuesday said they have discovered a way to make Earth-friendly plastic from plants that could replace petroleum-based products tough on the environment. Japanese electronics giant Sony is developing a new lineup of handheld products to counter Apple's stable of portable devices, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," said the products under development include a smartphone capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games being developed with Swedish cellphone partner Ericsson.

The US Federal Reserve is reviewing financing deals conducted by Goldman Sachs and others related to Greece's debt crisis, Fed chief Ben Bernanke said Thursday. Dutch office printer and copier manufacturer Oce said Monday it would oppose a bid by two shareholders to have an Amsterdam court investigate Japanese high-tech giant Canon's friendly takeover bid. "Hermes and Universities Superannuation Scheme have filed a request with the enterprise chamber of the court of appeals in Amsterdam for an investigation with respect to the negotiations between Canon and Oce about the tender offer for Oce shares and subsequent events," Oce said in a statement.

Matches at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be filmed in 3-D for the first time in a deal announced Friday by international football body FIFA and Sony. Up to 25 matches from the tournament, to be held in June and July, will be produced using Sony's 3-D professional cameras and shown to fans at special sites in cities around the world, they said in a statement.

The move is part of chief executive Howard Stringer's goal of converging Sony's strengths in electronics, such as Bravia televisions and PlayStation game consoles, and content generated by its movie studio and music label. "This is something I'd like to get off the ground as quickly as possible," said Sony executive vice president Kazuo Hirai, who also heads the company's game division.
